Spring! A wonderfully abundant time of year on the farm. The greenhouses are full of growing vegetables, and we are working hard and feeling grateful. The robins are back, the geese are hanging out on the pond, and the ruffed grouse are getting frisky.
This year we are expanding to two additional markets: Onoway Farmer’s Market (starts Thursday May 6 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.) and Alberta Beach Farmer’s Market (starts Sunday May 9 from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.). We are also expanding our on-farm family by hiring two people. We have planned additional field crops, and we look forward to meeting new faces and introducing them to our fabulous vegetables at markets this year.
Radishes, spinach, arugula, lettuce and mixed greens have come with us to the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market already this year. It is astounding how fast the greens grow at this time of year. Beets and romaine are coming along in due course. The unbelievably sweet carrots have germinated and are being diligently weeded, they’ll be ready later in May. The pansies self-seeded and are looking plentiful. Edible flowers are a while away yet, but once the plants get established there will be lots.
Remember that Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market has a curbside pick-up option. Check out their website to order from Sunrise Gardens and many other vendors for one-stop shopping from the safety of your vehicle.
Happy spring farm family!
