We like to do things differently around here – it is in our nature. We like to choose varieties of crops that are different in appearance, like purple and pink carrots, orange beets and red celery. We grow crops at different times, like radish in April, beets in May and carrots in June. We grow differently by using season extension techniques and by having a large portion of our farm indoors for sprouts, shoots and micro greens.
Over the years we’ve learned to nurture our difference, to accept and explore the extent that we can do things differently. What started off as a joke quickly became a dream and is now slowly transforming into our reality. We want to be farmers who take the summers off(ish).
Because of our indoor growing facilities the winter is no longer a time when we can take it easy, have much time off or do much catching up in other areas of our lives. If anything, we are busier during the usual ‘off’ season for other farmers. We are blessed to be running a successful farm – we’ve worked hard over the years and have developed a high quality standard that keeps our customers coming back for more. We really value the work we do, our relationships with chefs, local organic outlets and home cooks who use our produce and we have also come to see the importance of a wholistic approach to our quality of life.
Our goal is to focus on the indoor production 12 months a year, on very early crops such as mixed salad greens, radish, beets and carrots from our greenhouse beds and to grow a nice variety of winter storage crops such as squash, Brussels sprouts, beets and carrots. This leaves us the summer with less produce coming to market while other wonderful, local farms are bringing many beautiful crops, in abundance.
We plan on getting out to a few festivals, giving our dedicated staff some long weekends, taking more time to wander in the forest, go kayaking, fishing or camping. We may read, write, sing, play, dance and drum, but no matter what we will be doing, we’ll be doing things differently, and embracing that decision wholeheartedly.
Thanks so much to everyone for your support, understanding and encouragement! We will be back with our next newsletter for the Fall Equinox. Hope you all have a safe, fun and relaxing summer!
